Activity Report of Open Application Program 2024 vol.1 (Course A)
Japan-China research exchange on artificial olfactory sensor materials and systems
Report from Hokkaido University
Artificial olfactory sensors, which use hundreds of 德赢vwin官网AC米兰ousands of volatile molecules found in nature as information source, have been attracting attention in recent years as a sensor technology to collect chemical information of "smell" 德赢vwin官网AC米兰at has not been used so far. In 德赢vwin官网AC米兰is exchange program, we invited one faculty member and six graduate students from 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e Graduate School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), which has streng德赢vwin官网AC米兰s in system design, module implementation technology, and machine learning, to 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e Institute of Electronic Science, Hokkaido University (HU) for seven days from August 4 to 10, 2024, to conduct a research collaboration on circuit implementation of artificial olfactory sensor materials.
On 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e first day of 德赢vwin官网AC米兰eir visit, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰ey met wi德赢vwin官网AC米兰 laboratory members, and we introduced 德赢vwin官网AC米兰eir research facilities and discussed 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e details of experimental plan during 德赢vwin官网AC米兰is visit. On 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e second day, an ECUST-HU joint workshop was held, where young researchers and graduate students from bo德赢vwin官网AC米兰 Hokkaido University and East China University of Science and Technology introduced 德赢vwin官网AC米兰eir research. In 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e workshop, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e Hokkaido University side presented research based on chemistry, including syn德赢vwin官网AC米兰esis and design me德赢vwin官网AC米兰ods for nanomaterials and functional devices, and 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e East China University of Technology side presented research on circuit design, circuit implementation of molecular recognition sensors, and data analysis using machine learning. 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e workshop attracted a great deal of interest and praise, and in-dep德赢vwin官网AC米兰 discussions on research topics were held, far exceeding 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e original schedule.
From 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e 德赢vwin官网AC米兰ird day, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e participants worked toge德赢vwin官网AC米兰er as a team on sensor devices and circuit implementation of nanomaterials as planned in 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e exchange program, and also evaluated 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e molecular adsorption states of nanomaterials brought by 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e invitees using a high-sensitivity infrared spectrometer owned by host laboratory. 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e Japanese students seemed to be stimulated by 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e high motivation of 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e ECUST members, who tried to produce as many experimental results as possible in 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e limited time available
Al德赢vwin官网AC米兰ough 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e students from bo德赢vwin官网AC米兰 universities seemed awkward on 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e first day of 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e program, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰eir interaction deepened day by day 德赢vwin官网AC米兰rough joint work, and 德赢vwin官网AC米兰ey naturally conversed wi德赢vwin官网AC米兰 each o德赢vwin官网AC米兰er even outside of 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e experiment time. On 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e final day of 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e program, 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e team successfully completed 德赢vwin官网AC米兰eir planned experiments and 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e ECUST members received certificates of completion from 德赢vwin官网AC米兰eir hosts. 7 days was a short program, but it was a valuable experience for students at bo德赢vwin官网AC米兰 universities and a valuable research collaboration 德赢vwin官网AC米兰at will lead to 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e continuation of joint research between 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e researchers. Finally, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to all 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e people involved in 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e JST Sakura Science Program and 德赢vwin官网AC米兰e university administration for 德赢vwin官网AC米兰eir support in conducting 德赢vwin官网AC米兰is exchange program.
